In Solidarity with the Palestinians

Imam Al-Hajj Talib 'Abdur-Rashid

Since the year 1967, progressive African Americans have stood in solidarity with the Palestinian people, and in public condemnation of the state of Israel for its human rights violations against the Arab people of the holy land. We have also encouraged other Americans to do the same.
Based upon a platform of human rights, The Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) infused American liberation struggles with a consciousness that demanded activist recognition of the injustices being directed against the Palestinians, and the similarities between their struggle and that of America's indigenous peoples. One of the major architects of this initiative was SNCC member and later chairman, H. Rap Brown, who eventually took shahada and became Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin.  The Black Political Convention of 1972 affirmed the right of Palestinian self-determination, even as Native Americans, African Americans, Spanish-speaking Americans and others, struggled for the same. Now, four decades later at the outset of the 21st century, the social justice issues in this area of conflict still demand urgent, just, and permanent resolution.
The Israeli government's latest injustice is its collective punishment of the Palestinian people.  They claim that they are retaliating for the firing of rockets into civilian areas of Southern Israel by Hamas. According to Western media news sources, this attack  resulted in the death of 16-20 Israeli civilians. In return, Israel was justified to retaliate by  massacring nearly 400 Palestinians, many of them confirmed non-combatant men, women, and children, and the wounding of over 1700 others.

The sad truth is that all the reasons listed above for Israel’s actions against Hamas are false. First of all, the number of Israelis killed by Hamas rockets has been 20 over a period of more than 8 years. Secondly, Israel’s actions were never retaliatory because they broke the recent truce with Hamas numerous times during the cease fire with several incursions into Gaza, killing almost 200 Palestinians. Their latest incursion was on November 4, 2008 when they killed 4 more Palestinians. The rockets Hamas fired in retaliation for this latest attack caused zero Israeli casualties. No Israeli was hurt or killed by this Hamas attack.  Thirdly, they instituted an 18-month blockade of Gaza, making it a virtual prison and denying Palestinians food, clean water, medicines and other necessities. This in itself is an act of war according to international law.

Lastly and most importantly, the Israeli government has been planning this attack on Hamas for more than 6 months. As revealed recently in the Israeli press (see Haaertz article), the attack on Gaza was pre-planned more than 6 months ago. The narrative about Israel’s retaliation being in response to Hamas’ rocket launching was created as propaganda to justify their actions to the world. You can read the article at the link above to find out more.
Islam is a faith that upholds the sacredness of life and demands justice. Therefore, all Muslims must join the rest of the international community in calling for an immediate end to Israel's unjust attacks, which occur in gross violation of international law (e.g. article 33 of the 4th Geneva Convention prohibits collective punishment).  We condemn this latest act of devastation to the Palestinian people of Gaza.
Even as we decry American past confinement of its Native people to reservations, and Japanese American civilians to internment camps, we call for an end to the Israeli blockade of Gaza, that has made it both a reservation and a concentration camp. Just as we condemn the creation of a prison industrial complex in our land, we denounce the transformation of Gaza into a  confinement camp, with its citizens as the prisoners.
Allah has said:

"The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practice regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise".
Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has taught us, that whomever relieves the distress of a believer, Allah will relieve their distress.

May Allah relieve the suffering  of the Palestinian people, grant them authentic peace and true justice, guide and protect the Ummah, relieve all oppressed from undue aggression, and bring peace and victory to the believers.  Amin.
Thus, have We made of you an Ummat justly balanced, that ye might be witnesses over the nations, and the Messenger a witness over yourselves; and We appointed the Qibla to which thou wast used, only to test those who followed the Messenger from those who would turn on their heels (From the Faith). Indeed it was (A change) momentous, except to those guided by Allah. And never would Allah Make your faith of no effect. For Allah is to all people Most surely full of kindness, Most Merciful.
