MANA Statement Regarding Salaakhan Article

The Muslim Alliance in North America is issuing this statement in response to the numerous emails and other correspondences we've received regarding the article titled,  “The Real Message of the Bridges TV Tragedy”, written by Brother Mauri Saalakhan.  The article, which focused on the murder of Sister Aasiya Hasan (May Allah have mercy on her and grant her jannat, amin), appeared in our February 2009 e-Newsletter and on our website February 28th.  At the time, we were not aware of the allegations that eventually emerged concerning the author, his wife and a domestic incident.  We soon heard from Saalakhan himself by email regarding what he referred to as an attack on him.  In his email he wanted to forewarn us about the potential that MANA might receive negative responses to his article.  His email also included the following response with permission to publish it:

Assalaamu Alaikum to all reading this:

A nameless, faceless coward has decided to post a scurrilous attack on my character, and then sent it to me for my reaction. I will simply reply by stating emphatically that the charge is not true.

SEVERAL YEARS AGO, there was an incident involving my wife and I that resulted in Imam Johari Abdul Malik being called (by my wife) to settle an emotional and exaggerated dispute. He arrived with another brother, perhaps thinking that some physical intervention might be needed. It was not.

I will not dignify the back-biting coward(s) who sent this out with any additional response; except to say, my criticisms of abusers will not end.. Human rights begins at home. (And this simple rule applies to us all. Especially the writer of this post.)

Mauri' Saalakhan

After hearing from Saalakhan, we consulted with Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, who intervened in the matter years ago and is also a  member of MANA's Diwan.  Subsequently we took shura amongst other Diwan members, and the outcome of that shura process was the removal of Saalakhan's article from MANA's website.  Imam Johari also issued a public statement regarding the allegations.

MANA strongly condemns all forms of domestic violence and will always stand firmly to speak out against it.  It is haraam.  Through our Healthy Marriage Initiative, a cornerstone program of MANA's advocacy work, we commit our efforts and resources to make healthy marriages and spiritually-based families a top priority in our communities.  This important initiative requires that all participants, including imams, community leaders (men and women), and workshops participants sign the Healthy Marriage Covenant, which includes adherence to a zero-tolerance policy towards domestic violence.
When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me: Let them also, with a will, Listen to My call, and believe in Me: That they may walk in the right way.
