Minneapolis/St. Paul Begins Discussion of Adopting the Community Reentry Initiative

In July, the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) Dawah Group, who services most prisons in Minnesota, invited Dr. Ihsan Bagby and Imam Qasim Khan to Minneapolis/St. Paul for a series of events aimed at introducing MANA to the community and to discuss the possibility of adopting MANA’s Community Reentry Initiative.

On July 18, Dr. Ihsan Bagby gave a lecture on the History of Islam in America and Imam Qasim gave a talk on MANA.  The event took place at Masjid Dawah, which is a center for Somalis.  Minneapolis/St. Paul has the largest Somali population in the U.S.  The Imam of the Masjid, Hassan “Jami” Mohamud welcomed the group, expressing his desire to see the Somali community understand and appreciate the legacy of Islam in America, especially the contributions of African American Muslims.

On July 19, the Minnesota DOC Dawah Group organized an open meeting at Masjid An-Nur, which is under the leadership of Imam Makram El-Amin who attended and welcomed the group. The Amir of the Dawah Group, Brother Wafiq Fannoun, explained the work of the Dawah Group and then turned the meeting over to Imam Qasim to introduced MANA.  Dr. Ihsan then distributed the “Guidelines for Starting a Community Reentry Initiative in Your Community” and gave a full description of the Initiative, followed by a lengthy discussion of the project.  The meeting ended with the Dawah Group deciding to meet in two weeks to decide whether to adopt the Initiative.

Communities that would like to consider instituting the Community Reentry Initiative should contact the MANA office ( or 859-296-00206) to obtain a copy of the “Guidelines” and request a visit by a member of the Community Reentry Initiative Advisory and Resource Committee (CRI-ARC) to discuss the project.
Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance.
